Differentials in the Duration between the First and the Last Birth in Korea

Abstract
This research explores the differentials in the duration between the first and the last birth by birth cohort, age at marriage and number of induced abortion in Korea. Data from the 1997 National Fertility Survey by Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs are analyzed for this research. Among 6,450 women in the survey, 5,091 women who at least gave a birth and declare not to have more child at the time of the survey are included in the analysis. The impact of independent variables on the duration frome the first birth to the last birth is estimated with survival analysis. The result of this research reveals that there are differentials in the duration between the first and the last birth by birth cohort, age at marriage and number of induced abortion when controlling for education, residence, employment before marriage, and current number of children. This implies that changes in the timing of births can affect the overall fertility level even in the age of lower fertility.
